A Keilor woman who caused a crash that ended in a father being crushed by a 57-tonne petrol tanker has escaped jail time.

Sophie Williams had never even had a speeding fine when she pulled out in front of a truck on the Calder Freeway in May, 2016.

The loaded tanker swerved, rolled and slammed into several cars, killing Ascot Vale man Duc Nguyen and injuring six others.

Judge Mandy Fox said the 48-year-old’s dangerous driving crimes took a moment to commit, but had caused devastation for many others.

Ms Williams pleaded guilty and penned an apology letter to her victims, a letter Judge Fox described as heartfelt.

She will serve a four year community corrections order and has lost her licence for 18 months.
