Woolworths has come under fire over a joke about beef.

The meat section of the supermarket in Glenelg displayed the line: What do you call a cow with no legs? Ground beef.

But shopper Lesley Millward took issue with the joke, posting on the Woolworths Facebook page that is was “disrespectful” and “insensitive”.

Laura Weyman-Jones from PETA told Tom Elliott she’s glad it started a conversation.

“It’s really sad that anecdotes about animal abuse are normal,” Ms Weyman-Jones said.

“Unfortunately there is no ethical way to kill an animal for food.

“If you stepped into a slaughterhouse today, I very much doubt you would consider what’s happening to these animals to be ‘ethical’.”
