Melbourne’s morning peak is about to get a whole lot worse.

The government has announced ‘major works’ on the Bolte Bridge and West Gate freeway, which are expected to add delays of up to 15 minutes.

An extra lane is being built off the Bolte to improve traffic inbound on the West Gate freeway.

But one lane will have to be closed in the meantime.

Work will begin on March 18 and last 18 months.

‘We’ve been told to expect delays between 8 and 15 minutes in the morning peak on the West Gate and the Bolte,’ 3AW’s state political reporter Lauren Hilbert told Neil Mitchell.

‘These delays are so significant the government is going to advise motorists to take alternate routes.’

Neil Mitchell said he expected it the news to go down like a lead balloon.

‘People will be screaming about this,’ he said.
