World-first male contraceptive trial underway in Melbourne

Ross and Russ

A world-first male contraceptive trial is underway in Melbourne with 25 men testing a contraceptive injection that’s hoped to one day act as a temporary vasectomy.

The ADAM study involves a hydrogel being injected into the patient, blocking the passage of sperm.

“We think it will last around the two-year mark,” urologist at Epworth Freemasons, Professor Nathan Lawrentschuk, told Ross and Russel.

The trial has received an overwhelming response from interested participants, with hundreds registering in just two days.

“We had to shut our portal down,” he told Ross and Russel.

The three-year study is the first in-human trial of the contraceptive.
