Ashburton has been described as the bridesmaid suburb compared to Kew and Camberwell. Always coming second best.

But with median house prices in Ashburton $1.3 million, things are looking up.  

Glenn Ross, works at Ken Ross Watchmakers and Jewellers in Ashburton, the store has been there since 1954.  

Mr Ross says strip centres have got quieter in Ashburton and people are going to shopping centres.  

‘Ashburton has held its own for a long time but it’s not as good as once was,’

He said finding a car park and people dumping hard rubbish behind stores were issues.
