YOUR TOWN: 3AW Drive visits Brooklyn

The suburb of Brooklyn might be the home of the ‘soft garbage smell’ but it’s on the way up, locals say.

This week 3AW Drive visited the suburb in the city’s west, just 10 kilometres out of the CBD and although it’s inexpensive to buy and rent, the smell wafting from the landfill, industrial precinct and meat rendering in the area is one of the biggest issues.

The median house price is $680,000, up from $480,000 in 2014.

New houses are popping up in the area.

Rachel, 29, is a student who lives in Brooklyn. 

She said it was a ‘nice and cheap’ suburb to rent – but she’d like to see more of an investment in cafes and shops. 

And of course there’s the smell.

‘It happens maybe once or twice a week, maybe early in the morning or late at night, I worry about my lung function in the long term, I probably why won’t stay here for a long time,’ she said.

‘I can’t even describe it, maybe a soft garbage smell or chemical smell.’

She said the local council was working hard to improve Brooklyn sealing roads, building parks and so on.

‘I feel like it’s moving in the right direction,’ she said.

Caller Ben said while he wasn’t a ‘tip smell connoisseur’ he likened the smell to ‘death breaking wind.’
