Youth crimes rising in the suburbs

Following a carjacking involving a group of teens, some as young as 13 and 14, questions are being asked about the rise in youth crimes. 

The terrifying attack in St. Albans saw a twelve year old girl threatened with her life as her family pulled up to their driveway. Thirteen teens were arrested, while some will now appear before the childrens court. None were older than seventeen.

‘There is no doubt there is a perception of an increased fear in crime and increased fear in the community,’ Neil Mitchell said on 3AW.

Helen Fatouros, Executive Director of Criminal Law at Legal Aid, explained to Neil how the number of offenders has dropped, but the number of offences has increased.
