Insecurity in the job market may be behind the rise in start-up businesses.

More and more young people prefer to start their own business over joining a company, particularly compared to previous years.

Victoria’s Youth Governor Amanda Gailiss told Nick McCallum there’s less certainty about getting a ‘conventional’ job than there’s ever been.

Ms Gailiss said advances in technology have made starting from scratch less risky today.

‘People are seeing opportunities, such as creating apps and working in a globalised market,’ she said.

‘Starting your own business gives you the opportunity to do that on your own terms.’
