Zoe Daniel doesn’t ‘foresee any policy input’ from Holmes à Court
Zoe Daniel, the independent who has ousted Liberal Tim Wilson in the seat of Goldstein, says she doesn’t expect Simon Holmes à Court to have any say in the policy decisions of ‘teal’ independents.
She’s one of multiple independents who ran on a climate focused platform and received funding from Holmes à Court-backed Climate 200.
But Ms Daniel says she doesn’t “foresee any policy input” from Mr Holmes à Court.
“I gave Simon a call yesterday to say thank you for the support,” she told Neil Mitchell.
“Climate 200 did contribute to my campaign. We raised more than $1 million from within the community, but I appreciate that support to help me compete on a level playing field.”
With postal votes still being counted, as many as six ‘teal’ independents could win seats this election.
Ms Daniel says the popularity of the climate-focused independents comes due to “a lack of trust in leadership on both sides”.
“Maybe it’s also COVID as well,” she said. “Two years of reconnecting into our small communities, because we’ve had to, have made people revalue community.
“When you stand up as a community independent people say ‘Oh, this is actually a local community person who will directly represent me outside party lines’.”
