GWS Giants CEO Dave Matthews says he can’t explain how Wayne Carey was set to become a legend in the NSW Australian Football Hall of Fame before an 11th hour u-turn from the AFL.

In a week where violence against woman has been in the spotlight, Carey – who has had a chequered history with domestic violence – AFL CEO Andrew Dillon personally intervened to block his elevation to legend status.

When asked on 3AW Football how Carey could be told of the honour, before having it withdrawn hours before the gala event in Sydney on Friday night, Matthews couldn’t shed any further light on the process.

“I can’t explain it,” he told 3AW.

“I’m not really sure how the process behind the scenes rolled out, but the night overall looked like a real success.”
