3AW is celebrating a stellar night at the Australian Football Media Association (AFMA) Awards, picking up major honours and reinforcing its position as the home of Melbourne’s best footy commentary as the season enters its most critical weeks.

Broadcaster Anthony Hudson claimed a remarkable double victory, taking out both Best Radio Match Caller for his work on 3AW and Best TV Match Caller for his broadcasts on Fox Footy.

In awarding Hudson the radio honour, the AFMA judging panel praised his ability to bring major moments to life:

“In a fiercely competitive field with several outstanding entries, Anthony Hudson’s innate ability to capture the game’s energy, colour and flair once more elevated the listening experience, capturing history-making moments with razor-sharp detail. His endless enthusiasm and evocative use of language shone through in his submission.”

The station’s strong showing continued across key categories, with 3AW Football receiving a Commendable Mention for Best Radio Program, and expert commentator Matthew Lloyd earning a Commendable Mention for the Lou Richards Medal.

Ending the night on a high, 3AW Football’s expert commentator Leigh Matthews was formally inducted as an AFMA Life Member, with veteran journalist and colleague Caroline Wilson delivering his introduction. The honour recognises Matthews’ extraordinary career across sports broadcasting and media, building upon his unmatched legacy as the greatest player of all time and one of the game’s iconic coaches.

“Having Huddo named the top caller across both radio and TV in the same year is a brilliant result and totally deserved. When you pair that with recognition for Matthew Lloyd, our entire broadcast team, and a Lifetime Membership for Leigh Matthews, it highlights the unmatched authority of our commentary box,” said 3AW Head of Sport Luca Gonano

“With Preliminary Finals kicking off this Friday, footy fans know 3AW Football is the only place to turn for every big moment and the sharpest analysis in the game.”
