The AFL’s ambitious plan to build a boutique stadium specifically to host AFLW matches has been heavily criticised.

On Thursday, the AFL briefed media on a longer-term strategy with women’s football, with an ambition outlined to build a venue purely to host AFLW games.

“It would absolutely be a nice to have,” Shane said about the stadium on 3AW Football.

“But for the AFL to suggest we built a brand new stadium, when much of the funding would need to come from Victorian taxpayers – I think is simply ludicrous and a failure to read the room by the AFL.”
