Tony Jones has labelled a February once-off State of Origin clash as a “cute” fixture as the AFL confirmed the concept’s return in 2026.

Western Australia will host Victoria at Optus Stadium on February 14 – the first State of Origin match since 1999.

But the Channel 9 sports presenter isn’t a fan of the format, questioning whether the best players will be risked during pre-season.

“Do you really think that Craig McRae will want the likes of Nick Daicos playing in February,” Tony Jones questioned on 3AW Mornings.

“It’s a cute fixture – Valentine’s Day in the west. No, sorry.”
