Geelong’s third-party payment penalty labelled a ‘slap on the wrist’
Geelong has been fined for third-party payment irregularities between 2019 and 2024.
The AFL announced on Wednesday that the club had been fined $77,500, $40,000 of which has been suspended.
Channel 7 Chief Football Reporter Mitch Cleary said while the club hadn’t breached the salary cap, the months-long investigation had uncovered other inconsistencies.

“The AFL has discovered that the Cats had not been informing the AFL as they are required to do over those third-party payments,” he said on 3AW Afternoons.
“It’s a bit of a slap on the wrist in the scheme of things.”
Matthew Lloyd said the penalty would be perceived as “wet lettuce” by those not supporters of Geelong.

“I don’t think the neutrals will be happy with that … they think it’s a wet lettuce leaf,” he said.
