Former Carlton defender Sam Docherty says he’s struggling to understand the logic being used to change the current academy bidding system.

Cal Twomey told 3AW Football on Thursday night that ‘tough’ new rules were coming, which would make it harder for clubs to match bids for father-son and academy players in the future.

Docherty then said the news rules needed to be staggered over several years, rather than coming into effect this year.

“I find (the new rules) really hard to take,” he said.

“Especially from a club’s perspective in being able to plan forward.”
