Soccer fans across Melbourne are rejoicing, after Premier Jacinta Allan overturned the ruling made by the Melbourne Arts Precinct to not show Socceroos matches on the big screen during the FIFA World Cup.

The game is set to be broadcast from the popular viewing precinct, a move which was previously cancelled due to anti-social behaviour from fans during previous tournaments.

Speaking with Tom Elliott, CEO of Football Victoria Dan Birrell said that this was a win for common sense, that would allow the community to come together.

“I can’t guarantee that there won’t be flares. That’s probably as much on security and police,” Mr Birrell said.

“What I can say is the time slots for this year’s Socceroos, a very family friendly day. Weekend motivated time slots, 12 pm and 2 pm. So I think it’s significantly more unlikely there will be flares.”

Socceroos great, Robbie Slater, welcomed the overturned decision today.

“Jacinta Allan has obviously listened to you because that’s a very, very quick turnaround,” Slater told Jacqui Felgate on 3AW Drive.

Flares have been reported as a continual issue in the soccer sphere, with multiple reports of their use in an unsafe manner at football games and events.
