The state of Victoria has celebrated a public holiday on the Friday before the AFL grand final since 2015.

But in the current economic climate, many businesses cannot afford to open, which 3AW Drive host Shane McInnes said raised the question of whether the date of the holiday needed reviewing.

“The Friday before the biggest event of the year, and you’d be forgiven for thinking Melbourne was out of business in parts,” he said.
