AFL boss ‘bemused and disappointed’ by Melbourne meeting leak
AFL boss Gillon McLachlan says he’s “bemused and disappointed” details of a “private” conversation with Melbourne officials have since become public.
It’s reported by Mick Warner the briefing was called at a time the Demons board was considering standing Goodwin down ahead of the 2021 season, as it investigated claims of serious behavioural issues and bullying at the club.
The Demons went on to win the premiership and the club has since said Goodwin has its full support.
Speaking on 3AW, McLachlan said he was unaware the meeting, which he says came at the request of the Demons, was being recorded.
“I think there is an expectation that private conversations you’re asked to participate in … I think, broadly, people would expect them to remain confidential,” he said.
McLachlan remained tight-lipped when asked to confirm details of the report.
“If I have a private conversation with somebody, then I think that’s how it should stay,” he said.
“I’ll tell you the person who hasn’t put it out there – me.”
McLachlan also addressed the AFL’s fresh investigation into Sunday night’s scrap between Melbourne players, Tasmania’s bid for an AFL team, as well as concerns over crowd numbers at games.
