AFL boss discusses ‘plan b’ for grand final, should there be a COVID-19 outbreak in WA

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan says the league would have no qualms moving or delaying the grand final if crowds aren’t allowed to attend in Western Australia due to an unexpected COVID-19 outbreak.

Speaking on 3AW, McLachlan was asked if the league had a ‘plan b’ if the Western Australian government locked down later this month.

Optus Stadium is due to host the grand final on September 25.

Crowds were pulled just hours before the Western Derby earlier this year after a handful of COVID-19 cases emerged.

“Our position is clear,” McLachlan told Neil Mitchell.

“If crowds are locked out, with any sort of reasonable time, we’ll hold, or move the game.

“But after that, it’s a hypothetical.”

The league chief executive was also asked about what time the game would start, as well as the prospect of mandatory vaccinations to attend games next season.
