AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has assured footy fans the league played “zero” part in Alastair Clarkson’s decision to coach North Melbourne.

The league chief got on the front foot on 3AW on Friday after the legendary coach committed to the Roos.

“I’m keen to address that,” McLachlan told Neil Mitchell.

“There has been discussions around the place around ambassador stuff, I think people maybe thought that for Greater Western Sydney.

“It’s exactly as I said, I think on your show, that Alastair had to make the decision on the basis of what the clubs put to him and we played no role in it.”

He said the league was not paying a cent of Clarkson’s contract.
