AFL boss Gillon McLachlan admits there’s a “risk” James Hird will be booed at this year’s grand final.

But he’s pleaded with fans to look forward, not back, when it comes to the Essendon supplements saga.

It’s been confirmed Hird will present this year’s Norm Smith Medal on grand final day.

Speaking on 3AW, the league’s chief executive said he hoped fans could “look to the future.”

“James has served his time,” McLachlan said.

“He’s come back into football – he’s coached since then.

“He has a special place in our game as a player.”
