The AFL released a fresh statement late on Wednesday, walking back initial criticism of the umpires’ role in the unfolding Lachie Schultz concussion drama.

Football boss Laura Kane has now confirmed field umpires weren’t to blame for the initial miscommunication on play not stopping when Schultz was concussed, with the AFL pledging to review their processes.

Jimmy Bartel detailed the timeline of events on Wide World of Sports, wondering why player safety hasn’t been prioritised in the blame game that has followed.
