The AFL’s new footy boss says addressing the “looming crisis” with umpire numbers will be on the agenda in his new role.

Brad Scott spoke with 3AW on Thursday night after being appointed general manager of football.

“The game, at grassroots, is growing really strongly and umpire numbers are growing, but they’re not growing at a fast enough rate to keep up with participation,” Scott told 3AW.

“So, when you look at it from that lens, we’ve got a bit of an emergency.

“We have got to create pathways for umpires.

“I think, as an industry, we’ve got to change our view on umpiring.”
