Article image for American political editor explains why he found the Serena Williams cartoon highly offensive and problematic

An American political editor has explained to Neil Mitchell why millions of people around the world found Mark Knight’s controversial cartoon of Serena Williams offensive.

Dr Jason Johnson, who is also a professor of politics and journalism at Morgan State University in the United States, said the image reinforced historically negative stereotypes about African-American women.

Knight has been left rattled by the outrage, saying it was never his intention to for the image to be received the way it has.

Dr Johnson said that didn’t matter.

“He can claim until the cows come home that he didn’t intend this to be racist – maybe that wasn’t his intent – but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t,” Dr Johnson said on 3AW Mornings.
