The Victorian president of the Australian Education Union says “all options need to be on the table” – including remote learning – if it means stopping significant spread of COVID-19 once school resumes.

Tom Elliott fears it won’t be long before students are back at home due to COVID-19 isolation requirements.

Meredith Peace said there will almost certainly be instances where remote learning is required and that the health of teachers and students needed to come first.

“I’m not suggesting a wholesale shutdown of the education system,” she said on 3AW Drive.

“I’m saying that where we have circumstances, as we did in Term 4 last year, where we have larger outbreaks and large numbers of a school community impacted – students, staff and families – we need to be able to respond to that.

“And sending everybody to school, regardless, is not necessarily the answer.

“It might be for a short period you have remote learning, and then you come back.”
