Australian Open overturns ban on ‘Where is Peng Shuai’ t-shirts
The Australian Open has reportedly reversed its ban on ‘Where is Peng Shuai’ t-shirts, following fierce backlash.
The AFP News Agency reported that tournament boss Craig Tiley had said the ban would be overturned.
It comes after Tennis Australia came under fire for its heavy-handed approach at the weekend.
Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner Max Mok and another activist attended the tennis with a banner and t-shirts featuring Peng Shuai’s face on a wanted poster and the words ‘Where’s Peng Shuai?’ on the back.
They were approached by security, had their banner confiscated and were asked to remove their shirts.
Mr Mok told Tom Elliott on Tuesday he and his friends would be handing shirts out ahead of the weekend’s finals.
