After winning the AFL’s highest individual honour last night, Brownlow medallist Ollie Wines revealed he had a link to 3AW while growing up in Echuca.

“I used to ring up Rex Hunt and ask about Andrew Walker’s stats and I always got through every week,” he said.

“It would’ve been in the early 2000s.”

Wines finished on 36 votes last night, beating out Marcus Bontempelli by three votes to take home the Brownlow.

His mum says while her son’s football has gone from strength to strength, he’s still the same person he was when he made those calls to Rex Hunt as a youngster.

“His heart is as big as Phar Lap,” she told Stephen Quartermain and Emily Power, filling in for Ross and Russel.
