Chad Wingard has defended the toughness of modern AFL players.

When Sportsday caller Boris claimed modern-day players are less “gutsy” than in previous eras, he may not have realised Wingard was on the line as well.

The Port Adelaide star told Dwayne Russell the AFL is right to try and minimise collisions in the modern game.

“The explosiveness of the players is at an all-time high,” Wingard said.

“To try and contain those guys and stop serious injuries is a tough call for the AFL.

“They want to see the best players on the park every game.”
