Melbourne defender Jake Lever says initially feared the worst following a knee injury against Hawthorn last week, admitted he expected to miss the clash against Port Adelaide.

Lever starred in the Dees win on Saturday night, with his lietnant in defence Steven May absent after suffering cracked ribs against the Hawks.

Lever said it was a nervous wait before scans confirmed he had escaped any serious damage.

“(The injury against Hawthorn) just didn’t feel great,” he told 3AW Football.

“To be honest I didn’t think I’d be able to play this week.”
