There is no doubt footy fans have suffered a lot over the past two seasons, particularly in the sport’s home state of Victoria.

But 3AW’s Matt Granland, filling in as co-host on Sportsday, has listed a five-point plan as to how the league can make season 2022 the year of the fan and bring supporters back to stadiums in their droves.

  1. Start Friday night games at 7.20pm, not 7.50pm.
  2. Make sure there is a Saturday afternoon game scheduled in Victoria every round of the season.
  3. Schedule as many day games in Victoria as possible to get kids back to the football.
  4. Make sure members can sit together at the footy, which has been very difficult over the past two years.
  5. Come out as early as possible and let fans know the 2022 grand final will be at the MCG at 2.30pm on the last Saturday in September.

“That would be a huge signal to fans that the AFL is putting them first,” he said.
