Former Geelong star Cameron Mooney says the St Kilda side the Cats defeated in 2009 was the best team to not win a premiership in AFL history.

Mooney joined 3AW’s Footy: Then and Now podcast ahead of the Cats’ clash with the Saints.

Mooney said the 2009 decider between the two clubs was the “toughest game” of football he ever played in.

“It was brutal,” he said.

The two clubs played one of the great games in home and away history earlier that season.

Mooney said the Saints were “super” that year.

“They were the best team to not win one, I really do believe that,” he said.
