Hawthorn has won a thriller by six points.
Sydney led by seven points in time-on in the final quarter, but Shaun Burgoyne and Jarryd Roughead both sunk set shots from 50m out to give the Hawks a stirring win.
Luke Breust kicked three goals for the visitors, while Isaac Smith had a big influence in the final quarter.
Buddy Franklin was outstanding for Sydney, booting five goals and having a hand in several others.
Buddy’s third goal was the 817th of his career, putting him in the game’s all-time Top 10 goal-kickers.

Hawthorn leads by 21 points at the main break.
The Swans brought the margin in to four points midway through the second term before the Hawks kicked three steadiers.
Jake Lloyd (concussion) is an injury concern for Sydney.
3AW analyst Kane Cornes said the Swans haven’t had enough contributors.
“It’s been Franklin or nothing, really,” Cornes said.
