AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has rejected claims from Sam Newman the league’s officials are “political whores.”

Newman launched a tirade on The Footy Show on Thursday night, accusing a “sycophantic” AFL of telling people how to vote in the postal survey on same-sex marriage.

Speaking on 3AW Mornings, McLachlan said that wasn’t the case at all.

The league has been outspoken in its support for a ‘yes’ vote.

“We’re not telling anybody what to do,” he said.

The league’s chief executive said the AFL respected and understood all views on the issue.

“But I don’t believe we’re grandstanding, I don’t believe we’re political whores,” he said.
