Homesick Carlton defender retires at 23

Carlton defender Ciaran Byrne has retired.

The 23-year-old Irishman opted to return home despite having another year left on his contract.

Blues list boss Stephen Silvagni recently expressed doubt as to whether he’d return for the 2019 season after showing signs of homesickness.

Byrne played 22 games, including seven in 2018.
