Matthew Lloyd says he can understand why a secret meeting between AFL chief Gillon McLachlan and Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has caused angst with opposition clubs.

As revealed by Sportsday newsbreaker Tom Morris, the AFL boss met with Clarkson at a Prahran cafe on Monday where Clarkson vented his frustration about Sydney’s defenders blocking Hawthorn’s forwards on Friday night.

He declared after the match they’d got away with “blue murder”.

News of the meeting left Sydney coach John Longmire far from impressed.

Speaking on Sportsday, Lloyd understood why.

“I only wish it came after a win (because) it looks like sour grapes,” he said.
