Jimmy Bartel says Carlton should consider trading away their first pick

Jimmy Bartel says Carlton should consider trading away their first draft pick.

The lowly Blues are headed for a very early pick in the next draft, potentially pick one.

But Bartel said the Blues should look to turn that single early pick into a few.

“The way it stands at the moment, Carlton has pick one, and their next pick is pick 23,” Bartel said.

“Wouldn’t you want to blanket bomb the first round?”

Young prospects Izak Rankine and Jack Lukosius are considered the best two players in the upcoming draft pool, and both hail from South Australia.

Bartel said the Blues could tempt Adelaide into trading for their top pick to get a local boy without the “go-home factor”.

“Adelaide… currently has picks 8, 15, and 19, and if Rory Sloane was to leave, that’s another potential first-round pick,” he said.

Leigh Matthews said the idea has merit.

“The draft is a bit of a lottery. You’re better with more numbers in the lottery than just one pick.”
