Leigh Matthews and Tony Shaw reflect on the infamous 1990 grand final brawl and win over Essendon
Essendon is celebrating 150 years in the VFL/AFL, and they haven’t had many bigger foes on the field than Leigh Matthews and Tony Shaw over the journey.
The pair shared some memories of their encounters with the Bombers on Friday night.
Shaw was captain of Collingwood in 1990, while Matthews was the coach.
They faced off against the Bombers in the grand final that year, which remains one of the more memorable deciders of the modern era.
The clash will forever be remembered for a brawl at quarter-time and heated exchange between both sides, including Matthews, in the tunnel at half-time.
