Leigh Matthews’ blunt assessment of Richmond’s season-opening performance

Leigh Matthews has delivered a blunt assessment of Richmond’s Opening Round performance, calling it “horrible”.

The Tigers were smashed by Gold Coast in the first game of the Adem Yze era, adding some respectability to the scoreboard but still losing by 39 points.

Matthews said it was now a “tough mental ask” for a Richmond side – which has won three premierships since 2017 – to bounce back this year.

“They looked horrible really,” he told Wide World of Sports.

“They had no energy and just couldn’t get anything going.”
