Matthew Lloyd recalls his frank conversation with Kevin Sheedy after the 2001 prelim

There is no weekend like preliminary final weekend.

The pressure is extreme.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd told 3AW Football he’d “never been so nervous” as he was when the Bombers played their 2001 preliminary final against Hawthorn.

Lloydy was suspended and sitting in the coach’s box with Kevin Sheedy.

Thankfully, for him, the Bombers scraped over the line.

“We won and ‘Sheeds’ grabbed me and said ‘you nearly cost us, so you have to speak to your teammates’ and I had to let them know how badly I’d let them down and what I was going to do to help them in the grand final,” Lloydy recalled on 3AW.
