North Melbourne boss Ben Amarfio has addressed reports Jason Horne-Francis has pushed back negotiations over a new deal at the struggling club.

Last year’s No.1 draft pick has been a shining light for the Roos in his first eight games for the club, but the Roos are languishing with just one win from their first eight games.

Amarfio was asked on 3AW what Horne-Francis “would be looking for” in the coming weeks to commit long-term to the club.

“I mean, the obvious answer to that is that it’s a question for Jason, his management and his family, I guess,” the club CEO said.

“All we can do is provide the best possible environment for Jason and for other recruits, and other players, for that matter.

“An environment where they’re learning, growing, developing and enjoying coming to work – that’s the best we can do – and hopefully we have a bit of success along the way and create a great camaraderie and great bond between players with the coaching panel, as well.

“Ultimately, that’s up to Jason.

“It’s not unusual, he’s not the only first round pick who hasn’t signed yet and, like anyone, he’s got to make sure he’s had time to sit and think and I guess will make his decision at the end of the year.”

It comes after coach David Noble apologised to the playing group in the aftermath of the Kangaroos’ 108-point loss to the Brisbane Lions in Round 3.

“He felt as though he probably went a tad hard and felt like he needed to apologise to the players, and so he did,” Amarfio said.
