Clinical exercise physiologist and high performance coach, John Quinn, has explained why teams are struggling to win games coming off the bye in the AFL.

No team coming off the bye this season has won when playing against a team which has played the week before from nine attempts.

Quinn was the high performance manager at Essendon from 1998 to 2008, and felt he didn’t get the preparation right in the week off for the Bombers between the qualifying and preliminary final in 1999 when they lost by one point to Carlton.

He decided to change things up in 2000 which helped deliver the Bombers a flag, with Matthew Lloyd claiming Quinn was as “knowledgeable” a man as he’s ever met.
