Leigh Matthews’ take on how a send-off rule would work

3AW FOOTBALL

Leigh Matthews says the AFL is “ready” for a send-off rule.

Tomas Bugg hit on Callum Mills, which left the Swans a man down for the entire match, has put a send-off rule back on the radar.

Lethal told 3AW Football how it would work, using last night’s incident as an example.

He said a review panel could have removed Bugg from the game as soon as the next break in play.

“Not an instant send-off, but at the next break, you confirm everything,” Leigh said.

“That seems fair and reasonable to me.”

But AFL football operations manager Simon Lethlean poured cold water on it.

“I don’t think a send-off rule has a place in the elite level of our game,” Lethlean said.

Lethlean also said the AFL isn’t thinking about re-introducing a sub.
