Four men have handed themselves into police after A-League “hooligans” were involved in a violent pitch invasion at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

Detectives have released detailed images of six people involved after more than 150 Melbourne Victory fans rushed onto the field, injuring two players, a referee and a cameraman.

Acting Superintendent of North-West Metro Region Specialist Operations at Victoria Police, Jason Goddard, says the behaviour of the pitch invaders has “set football back so far”.

Offenders face possible lifetime bans and Melbourne Victory could be forced to play its remaining matches behind closed doors or be stripped of competition points as part of potential sanctions.

Three men were injured in the incident, with a Melbourne City goalkeeper taken to hospital with a head injury after being struck in the head with a metal bucket full of sand.

The bucket also struck a match official.

The third man injured was a cameraman who was struck in the back of the head with a flare.

Acting Superintendent Goddard says he has “no doubt” police will be knocking on the doors of those involved “very soon”.

Anyone who recognises the men pictured, or who has information or phone vision is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log onto www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
