Richardson “confused” after Curnow brothers’ tribunal decision

AFL legend Matthew Richardson says umpire contact needs to be made “black and white” after another day of tribunal controversy.

Both Ed and Charlie Curnow were charged with intentional umpire contact by Match Review Officer Michael Christian on Monday, before the tribunal let off the Carlton pair with a $1000 fine the following day.

The AFL announced on Wednesday they would appeal the decision, with General Manager of Football Operations Steve Hocking calling the tribunal’s outcome “manifestly inadequate”.

“I’m confused,” Richardson told Sportsday.

“I don’t think you can touch an official in any sport. If you accidentally touch an (AFL) umpire, bad luck.

“I thought we were really clear on that but after this week’s decision, it’s clear as mud.”
