The CEO of the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service says she’s saddened, but not surprised, by damning allegations being levelled at former senior Hawthorn figures that’s prompted an official investigation and seen two AFL coaches take leave until that investigation is completed.

Nerita Waight told 3AW Drive whether it was Adam Goodes, Eddie Betts, pre-season camps, abuse from fans at games and on social media, racism was a prevalent issue in the game.

“What I’ve seen is an inability by the AFL to address this issue and respond to it properly,” she said.

“I think the AFL has been focused on leveraging our people to promote the game, that’s for sure, but I don’t think we have seen the meaningful work that needs to take place to address racism within clubs.”
