A popular beach on the Bellarine Peninsula will remain closed this morning after a suspected shark attack.

A 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were swimming at the Ocean Grove main beach when it’s believed a shark bit the girl on the calf and the boy on his back at about 7.20pm last night.

Heroic bystanders paddled over to the pair to help them to shore.

Patrols had finished for the day but off-duty lifesavers and an off-duty nurse came to their rescue and administered first aid until paramedics arrived.

Both teenagers were taken to Geelong Hospital in stable conditions.

The animal has been spotted less than 500 metres from shore.

Swimmers have been reminded to stay between the flags and report shark sightings by calling Triple 000 or by alerting lifeguards.

Shark Scientist at The Australian Marine Conservation Society, Dr Leonardo Guida, says the shark was likely a bronze whaler.

“Bronze whalers this time of year will come into Port Phillip,” he told Ross and Russel.

“They’re also known to come quite close to shore in the surf areas as well.

“They could be making their way back up into the bay .,.. and getting ready to pup in the summer waters.”
