A heroic family has sprung into action to save two teenage shark attack victims at Ocean Grove.

The Hobbs family were in the water at the beach at 7.20pm on Monday night when they noticed a commotion nearby.

Diane Hobbs, a former trauma nurse rushed to help, along with off-duty lifeguards who were nearby, while the rest of the family called for help.

“We saw that they were distressed and there was another surfer going out to help them … that’s when we heard her say ‘bite’, ‘shark’,” Ms Hobbs told 3AW Mornings.

She says the injured teens, a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, were “amazing”.

“They remained calm.

“She sustained a couple of bites, one to the right lower below knee, the calf area, and the other one to her hand.

“She actually saw the shark … and she bashed it away.

“The shark has also come around and scraped the boy’s back too.”

Ms Hobbs was able to tourniquet the girl’s leg, while Mr Hobbs called Triple 000.

“My background is in trauma and emergency nursing so I guess those skills just come in and take over and you just do what you do,” Ms Hobbs said.
