The COVID-19 ‘transition’ an epidemiologist says Victoria is in the middle of
An epidemiologist says Victoria is in the midst of a COVID-19 “transition”, with latest outbreak of the Delta strain now looking unlikely to be completely stamped out.
Victoria recorded 80 new locally-acquired cases of the virus today, the highest daily figure since last year.
More than half of those cases were infectious while in the community.
Chair of epidemiology at Deakin University, Professor Catherine Bennett, says it’s now about “managing it, controlling it” and “keeping the numbers down while we rapidly vaccinate”.
“I think that’s where we are now — starting to transition to living with this virus,” she told Neil Mitchell.
“Now it’s not so much about the cases, it’s as much about how we’re travelling with vaccination.”
