Leigh Matthews says Melbourne should give serious consideration to playing Brodie Grundy over Max Gawn in the next few weeks, giving their star skipper a chance to have a breather before the finals.

Speaking on 3AW, Matthews said player management late in the season had clearly given Geelong a boost before their ultimate premiership success last year.
