Tony Jones questions lucrative prize attached to McClelland Trophy

Hawthorn has won this year’s McClelland Trophy – now given to the best performed club across AFL and AFLW.

Recently re-introduced to the competition, the prize now come attached with $1m for the winner, but Channel 9 sports presenter Tony Jones wonders whether the seven-figure sum really made sense.

“I don’t know why it’s worth a million dollars,” Tony Jones told Tom Elliott.

“For something that doesn’t get a lot of traction, it seems to have a big price tag attached to it.

“I don’t think the Hawthorn marketing department is going to be churning out t-shirts any time soon saying that they won the McClelland Trophy.”
